What are the benefits of learning to sing in a church choir?
• You will receive free singing lessons, and a really good grounding in music. Former choristers at All Saints have gone on to sing in The National Youth Choir, gain choral scholarships at university, sing in Cathedral choirs and reach the final stages of the Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year.
• The instruction you receive will enable you to progress through the well-recognised Royal School of Church Music Awards Scheme.
• A choral and musical training at All Saints’ will help you with your GCSE and A-level music exams and former choristers have gained excellent results in these.
• Free preparation and help in showcasing your choral ability in the Isle of Wight Musical Competition Festival, both solo & choir classes. •
Young choristers with a trophy won at the Music Festival
You will gain experience of singing a large repertoire of sacred music, both old and new. For example, the choir sings a different anthem every week from its very extensive and ever-expanding library of music.
• Membership of a Church Choir is a good thing to put on your CV, with its element of service to the community and demonstration of reliability and commitment.
• You will receive a modest quarterly pay packet based on attendance at practices and services, and which increases as you gain experience, with extra pay if you sing at additional services, such as weddings.
• Opportunities to sing at other events and with other choirs on the Island and on the mainland. For example, in previous years All Saints’ choristers have sung at Portsmouth Cathedral and at the British Legion Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall
What will be expected of me?
• Initially, new Choristers are expected to attend at least one service on a Sunday (either morning Eucharist at 10am or Evensong at 6.30pm). The choir meets half an hour before these times to practise.
• Young choristers are expected to attend practice on Tuesday 5.15 – 6.15pm (Trebles only) AND Thursday 7.30 – 8.30pm (Full Choir)
• There are occasionally extra services for which a choir is required, eg Good Friday, weddings, funerals – if these don’t clash with school.
• Individual singing lessons will be arranged for you with the Director of Music.
• Your choir robes will be provided, and you need to look smart and wear black shoes.
What should I do next if I want to know more?
• Phone the Director of Music (564161)
• Attend an All Saints’ Choir workshop.
• Come along to a Sunday Service and listen to the choir ‘in action’.
Please note that All Saints' has a rigorous Child Protection policy, with adult choir members having CRB checks and arrangements in place for another adult to be present at trebles-only practices.
